| HANOI (5 Sept 2008) – The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) are using the on-going National Under-21 championship to select players for the Merdeka Tournament in Malaysia and also for the SEA Games in Laos next year.
The U22 national team selectors will be in the central coastal province of Binh Dinh for the National U21 Football Championships to look at players before making the final selection.
The championship is set to end on 14 Sept 2008.
“Back in June, when the National Thanh Nien U21 qualifiers were taking place, we sent football experts to matches around the country to look at the players,” said Nguyen Trong Giap, the deputy head of the national teams’ department of the VFF.
“We made a list of players born between 1986 and 1990 and we reviewed the V-League and First Division championships to choose about 28 young players for the national U22 team.”
However, in spite of the data collated the final list will only be presented to the VFF after the second U21 international tournament which is to be played on 20-28 Sept, 2008.
After which, the VFF will then announce the list of selected players on October 1 to prepare for the Merdeka Cup in Malaysia (15-25 Oct 2008) and also in preparation for the SEA Games in Laos next year.
