| PETALING JAYA (2 Feb 2009) – B. Sathianathan’s stint as the national coach of Malaysia ended yesterday when the Executive Committee of the FA of Malaysia (FAM) decided to end his contract.
But it is not only Sathianathan who was given the boot following’s Malaysia’s exit from the group stage of the AFF Suzuki Cup 2008 in December and the 5-0 loss to United Arab Emirates (UAE) in an Asian Cup qualifying match, team manager Datuk Soh Chin Aun was also relieved of his duty.
“I was informed by the general secretary of the FAM (Datuk Azzuddin Ahmad) that my service is no longer needed,” said Sathianathan.
“I have accepted their decision although I would like to read the content of their letter first before I make a statement on the matter.”
Sathianathan took over the hot seat from Norizan Bakar following Malaysia’s dismal outing in the Asian Cup 2007 and where he led them to the Merdeka Tournament title the same year.
“There are several contributing factors which led to the defeats although on my part, I would like the players to continue to show their best each time they don national colours,” added Sathianathan.
