SINGAPORE (3 February 2025) – The group phase of the ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup™ reaches its thrilling climax this week as seven clubs will fight for the three remaining semi-final places of the inaugural regional competition.
Vietnam’s Công An Hà Nôi booked their place in the last four with victory over Kuala Lumpur City FC in the previous round of group matches to leave their rivals facing a desperate final day showdown to advance to the knockout phase and remain in contention for the title.
BG Pathum United FC go into Matchday Five as Group A leaders ahead of Terengganu FC and the Thai League One side host the Malaysians on Wednesday with both clubs harbouring hopes of picking up the result that will take them into the next round.
Two points separate the top four teams in the group standings and, with third-placed PSM Makassar due to host Vietnam’s Ðông À Thanh Hôa in Indonesia, any two from that quartet can still progress.
Eliminated duo PKR Svay Rieng FC of Cambodia and Myanmar’s Shan United FC face off in the group’s remaining fixture on Wednesday.
Thursday, meanwhile, will see three clubs aiming to secure the second berth available from Group B after Công An Hà Nôi sealed their qualification for the knockout phase in the previous round of matches.
Mano Polking’s side top the standings and are assured of a first-place finish, leaving Thai League 1 champions Buriram United FC, Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur City and Borneo FC Samarinda from Indonesia fighting for the one remaining place in the last four.
Buriram United will host Kuala Lumpur City with coach Osmar Loss keen to ensure his side return to winning ways after their 0-0 draw with Lion City Sailors FC in the most recent round.
“I think it will be a really great game because it’s like a final with both teams able to fight for the position for the next stage,” Loss said. “And I’m really happy that we are playing at home because we have such a tight schedule.
“Our stadium is not full for every game but we have great supporters, whether it is 8,000 or 20,000, who will make an atmosphere and environment in the game which is really important for our players.”
Borneo FC face a trip to Vietnam to take on Công An Hà Nôi with only a one-point difference between the three teams battling for the last remaining semi-final slot from Group B.
Kaya FC-Iloilo and Lion City Sailors, neither of whom can qualify for the knockout phase, complete the schedule, with all three matches in Group B also due to be played simultaneously.
The first-ever ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup™ semi-finals will be played over two legs on a home-and-away basis on April 2 and 30, with the inaugural final to be held on May 14 and 21.
