PHU THO (7 August 2025) – The Philippines made an impressive start to their defence of the ASEAN Women’s MSIG Serenity Cup™ on Thursday with a 7-0 thrashing of Timor-Leste while two-time champions Myanmar held on to record a 2-1 victory over Australia at Việt Trì Stadium in Group B.
Quinley Quezada and Dionesa Tolentin both scored twice with Aaliyah Schinaman, captain Hali Long and Adelaide Wyrzynski also on target as Mark Torcaso’s side moved to the top of the early standings in Group B, ahead of Myanmar on goal-difference.
Schinaman provided the Philippines with the perfect start, netting from close range in the second minute after Quezada redirected Malea Cesar’s cross from the right into her team-mate’s path.
Five minutes later the champions doubled their advantage through Quezada, the forward scoring at the second attempt after seeing her initial effort blocked at close range.
The Philippines continued their early onslaught in the ninth minute when Long met Chandler McDaniel’s corner from the right with a perfect header to give Gorette da Deus no chance.
With 13 minutes left in the half, Quezada claimed her second of the evening when she controlled Tolentin’s cross from the left on her chest before slamming her shot beyond the goalkeeper.
Tolentin added her side’s fifth in the 57th minute when she lifted the ball over Gorette from wide on the right side of the penalty area, and she scored her second of the night seven minutes later from close range following a mix-up in the Timor-Leste defence.
Substitute Wyrzynski bundled the ball over the line from close range with 16 minutes remaining after a goalkeeping error to net the Philippines’ seventh.
Earlier in the day, a goal in each half from May Thet Mon Myint and Win Theingi Tun earned Myanmar an opening three-point haul as Tetsuro Uki’s side held on to take the points against Australia despite an 85th minute strike by Holly Furphy.
Myanmar took the lead in the 32nd minute through a speculative effort from May Thet Mon Myint, the midfielder sending a curling and dipping effort from 25 yards beyond goalkeeper Sally James after the ball landed in her path following a challenge between Phyu Phwe and Sofia Sakalis.
The lead was doubled within two minutes of the restart when James’ attempt to pass out from defence was cut out by Win Theingi Tun, who stole possession and slid the ball into the empty net.
The Australians pushed for a way back into the game and Furphy reduced the deficit five minutes from time when she slotted in Keane’s low centre from the left, but Myanmar held on to claim the points.
