BURIRAM (22 May 2025) – Buriram United FC of Thailand claimed the inaugural ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup™ with a 3-2 penalty shoot-out win over Công An Hà Nội FC on Wednesday as veteran Chatchai Bootprom saved a trio of spot-kicks to secure the title for his side at a rain-soaked Buriram Stadium.
Chatchai’s heroics between the posts earned the Thai League 1 champions the Southeast Asian title at the end of a dramatic two-legged clash that ended in a 5-5 aggregate draw after a pulsating 3-3 tie in northern Thailand.
The 38-year-old saved penalties from Jason Pendant Quang Vinh, Hugo Gomes and Bùi Hoàng Việt Anh to prevail in a battle of the goalkeepers after Công An Hà Nội’s Filip Nguyen kept out efforts from Martin Boakye and Kenny Dougall.
“The key to tonight’s win was experience as well as focus and concentration,” said Chatchai. “I have never had as dramatic an experience as this in all my career. I want to thank all my team mates for winning this today.
“I feel very good because we won this trophy. We won the Thai league but this was the key for me because I played a lot in this tournament. We wanted to win this trophy because we wanted to be the number one in ASEAN,” added the Buriram United goalkeeper who claimed the Shopee Star of the Match award this evening.
Công An Hà Nội had taken the lead in the 15th minute through Pendant, the full-back receiving a return pass from Leo Artur before laying off to Nguyễn Quang Hải, and the captain found Pendant in space behind the defence to calmly slot past Chatchai.
The home side’s task was made doubly difficult with six minutes remaining in the half when referee Koji Takasaki pointed to the penalty spot after consulting the pitch-side monitor following a clash between Peter Zulj and Hugo Gomes. Leo Artur coolly slotted home.
Nguyen then made a string of saves to deny the hosts until Buriram United’s persistence paid off with seven minutes left when Zulj placed his shot on the turn into the corner after the defence failed to clear Lucas Crispim’s shot.
Crispim unleashed an unstoppable free kick from 30 yards past Nguyen in the 98th minute to take the game into extra-time, the ball crossing the line via the underside of the crossbar with virtually the last kick of regulation time.
The Brazilian then played a key role as Buriram United went in front in extra-time, sending in a cross from the right that struck Giáp Tuấn Dương on the hand and Bissoli dispatched the resulting penalty down the middle to beat a helpless Nguyen in the 105th minute.
But two minutes from the end of extra-time, the visitors levelled the scores once more, Alan Grafite rising highest to meet Quang Hải ‘scorner to send a remarkable game to penalties, where Buriram United eventually prevailed.
Chatchai’s heroics in the penalty shoot-out earned him the Shopee Star of the Match award while Crispim was named the Shopee Star of the Season for his excellent form throughout Buriram United’s title-winning campaign.
