SINGAPORE (17 October 2025) – The ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) was named AFC Regional Association of the Year by the Asian Football Confederation during the AFC Awards Riyadh 2025 last 16 October 2025 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The recognition reflects AFF’s collective achievements in developing football through shared initiatives in grassroots programs, youth and women’s competitions, technical education, and strengthened regional cooperation, brought on by a unified front under the mantra: ASEAN United.
AFF President Major General Khiev Sameth, who received the award on behalf of the AFF, emphasised that the honour belongs not only to AFF, but also to the entire ASEAN football family.
This recognition is not just for the AFF as an organisation, but for every Member Association that has stood together with us,” said Sameth. “Our strength has always been our unity. By working hand in hand, we have raised the standards of the game and created lasting impact across Southeast Asia. This award inspires us to deepen that collaboration that allows us to emerge stronger, together.”
The AFC Regional Association of the Year Award is presented to a regional body that has delivered exceptional impact through its programs, governance, and service to its members. AFF’s recent milestones, including enhanced youth and women’s tournaments, collaborative development initiatives, and stronger engagement with stakeholders, were all shaped by cross-border coordination among its 12 Member Associations.
AFF also proudly celebrates the success of its Member Associations honoured during the AFC Annual Awards 2025. The Football Association of Thailand received the AFC Member Association of the Year (Diamond) award for its exemplary leadership and continued excellence in football development. The Lao Football Federation was honoured with the AFC Member Association of the Year (Ruby) distinction, recognising its rapid growth and commitment to elevating the game. Meanwhile, the Football Association of Malaysia earned the AFC President’s Recognition Award for Grassroots Football (Silver) for its sustained focus on building strong foundations at youth level.
“I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the Football Association of Thailand, the Lao Football Federation, and the Football Association of Malaysia for their remarkable achievements,” added Sameth. “These accolades are not only a reflection of individual excellence, but also a testament to the strength, unity, and progress of football in the region. Their success continues to inspire our region, and together, we will keep pushing the boundaries of what ASEAN football can achieve.”
In addition to the collective honours, AFF also recognises the outstanding achievements of individuals representing the region on the continental stage. Alex Badolato of Melbourne Victory and Australia was named AFC Youth Player of the Year (Men), highlighting his emergence as one of Asia’s brightest young talents after an AFC U20 Asian Cup championship medal and Most Valuable Player honours. Meanwhile, Australia’s elite refereeing team, Alireza Faghani, Anton Shchetinin and Ashley Beecham, received the AFC Referees Special Award for their excellence and consistency at the highest level of international competition.
“These individual accolades reflect the depth of talent and professionalism we have within ASEAN,” furthered Sameth. “From rising stars like Alex Badolato to world-class officials such as Alireza Faghani, Anton Shchetinin and Ashley Beecham, their achievements showcase the quality that our region brings to the global stage. They serve as role models for the next generation, and AFF is proud to celebrate their success alongside our Member Associations.”
With these recognitions, AFF reaffirms its commitment to advancing football through unity, partnership, and shared ambition across the ASEAN region.
