YANGON (16 Sept 2011) – Vietnam confirmed their win of Group B of the AFF Under-19 Championship 2011 with a 4-0 demolition of Laos at the Aung San Stadium as Myanmar finished second in the group following their slightly delayed 1-0 win over Indonesia in the other match that was played at the Youth Training Centre.
With the rain creating havoc yet again, the confident Vietnam side decided to use Russian-born keeper Dang Van Lam for the first time in the competition and the lanky lad was a figure of confidence as he maintained a strong defensive backline.
Vietnam created the first real chance of the game in the 13th minute when off a cross from Vo Huy Toan, striker Ngo Van Tung’s header was just a tad off target.
Two minutes later, Laos replied with a shot from Chantaphone Waenvongsoth but his grounder came off Que Ngoc Hai instead for a futile corner.
And while Nguyen Thanh Hien’s 32nd minute attempt might have come off the Laotian crossbar, there was no stopping Vietnam two minutes later when Ngoc Hai converted a penalty for them to take the lead.
The Vietnamese were awarded with a penalty when Laos defender Phouthasay Khochalern was adjudged by Malaysian referee Nagor Amir Mohamed to have fouled Vietnam’s Huy Toan inside the box.
Five minutes later, Vietnam made it 2-0 – this time, Nguyen Xuan Nam was quick to capitalise on Laos goalkeeper Phonepaseuth Vongsipasom ‘s mistake to score.
The break did little to take the pace off Vietnam as just three minutes in, they added two further goals off a second strike from Xuan Nam (47th minute) and then from substitute Nguyen Viet Phong (48th).
“The players did what was expected and I have no complain,” said Vietnam team manager Truong Hai Tung after the game.
Meanwhile, at the Youth Training Centre, the game between Myanmar and Indonesia had to start later than scheduled following the heavy downpour which caused the playing field to be unplayable.
And when referee Jovanie Villagracia from the Philippines finally blew for the first whistle of the game more than an hour later, an exciting and close encounter ensued.
The Indonesians, who were still fighting for a place in the next round, gave no quarters as Myanmar pressed from the onset.
But in the end, a solitary strike from Yan Naing Htwe in the 87th minute made the difference as Myanmar will now look forward to playing against the winning team from Group A.
“It was a really tough game and Indonesia resisted for the most parts but the players fought hard for the win today,” added Gerd Horst, the chief coach of Myanmar.
