JAKARTA (4 Dec 2008) – The gloomy conditions that has loomed over the capital of Indonesia over the last few days is set to lift when the AFF Suzuki Cup kicks-off here tomorrow.
With all four participating teams – hosts Indonesia, defending champions Singapore, Myanmar and Cambodia –promising to deliver their best, football fans in the region are in for a real blast.
And what a thrilling opening tie awaits football fans who have waited two years for this tournament.
The Lions, who sensationally claimed Southeast Asia's most prized trophy in 2006, will open their campaign against qualifying round winners Cambodia tomorrow evening.
Cambodia, considered the minnows of Group A, have vowed to come out fighting.
"Our target is to be successful this year. We have worked hard to prepare for this tournament and we will make the best of our opportunities," said coach Prak Sovonnara, whose side faces a tough opening encounter against the Lions tomorrow evening.
"I realise it will be difficult against strong teams like Singapore. We have some new players like Khim Borey who have great potential and these players are the future of Cambodian football. We have come here not to lose, our aim here is clear, we want to to be successful."
On paper, Cambodia do not stand much of a chance against the reigning champions but Singapore have had some hiccups in the run-up to the AFF Suzuki Cup.
In one of their latest matches, Singapore saw a two-goal lead matched by Malaysia.
"If you win one game you are big, but it changes when you lose the next game. Every team here has worked hard to prepare for this tournament and will want to challenge us," said Singapore coach Raddy Avramovic.
His concern of the other teams was clear when he shot a down a journalist who called Cambodia a 'small team'.
The journalist had posed the question to Prak when Avramovic jumped in and said: "You're wrong ... all the teams here are strong, there are no longer small teams in this tournament."
And speaking of questions, there were surprisingly none about the rainy conditions, which have drenched the city over the last few evenings.
Event officials will be hoping the rain will stay away tomorrow and provide the best playing conditions for the opening tomorrow.
Singapore will take on Cambodia in the opening match of the AFF Suzuki Cup 2008.
The match will kick-off at 5.00pm (Indonesian time) at the massive Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.
Hosts Indonesia will take on Myanmar in the second match at the same venue at 7.30pm.
