ROARING START FOR THE REIGNING CHAMPIONS

JAKARTA (5 Dec 2008) – Defending champions Singapore continued where they left off two years ago when they scored a rampaging 5-0 win over Cambodia in their opening AFF Suzuki Cup match at the Gelora Bung Karno here this evening.

It was the best start that coach Raddy Avramovic could have had as they prepare to defend the title they sensationally won in 2006.

The Lions went for the kill right from the start and could have walked away with a bigger win had it not been for the many misses.

Avramovic was not concerned about the scoreline, what was more important was that they had gotten off on the right foot.

"The players created a lot of chances and four of them managed to score tonight. It's a good win for us," said Avramovic, who was also pleased with the way his players handled themselves on the pitch.

"They tried to play to my instructions, some were more successful than others, but they all tried."

The Lions certainly tried, especially in the first half when the game was almost entirely parked in the Cambodian half. Striker Aleksander Duric was menacing and had several close calls and one shot off the post.

With time almost up, Singapore finally broke through and netted a somewhat messy goal. It was chaotic in front of goal and Agu Casmir stepped up and stabbed the ball in.

In the second half it was all Singapore. Mustafic Fahrudin doubled the score in the 61st minute while substitute Indra Sahdan Daud added a third in the 71st minute.

Mohd Noh Alam Shah added his name to the scoresheet a minute later while Casmir wrapped up the match in the injury time.

Cambodian coach Prak Sovonarra said that his boys had a good first half.

"But when they were physically worn down, everything changed for us. We were unfortunate that Singapore took their chances well and added more goals."
